What's the difference between attic and basement?

The subject of this post began with a joke. I was in the car with my mother and my sister, it was windy a lot outside and my mother joked: "Look the tornado getting closer!" and she started talk abou tornados - that if we live in U.S. we already had gone to the basement.

Wait, basement? Or attic? And in this moment de doubt arose, what is the difference between attic and basement?

I googled and here are the difference!

Attic is at the top of the house. Do you know movies houses that always have a "window"in the roof? So, it is the attic.

And basement is in the lower part of the house. We can't see just looking at the front of the house, we only can see being in the house.

Perhaps to you this is a silly question, but in Brazil it isn't common have an attic or basement in our houses, so that's why Brazilians get confuse.
